ArtQuench Presents Contemporary Artist Olga Ornata

ArtQuench Presents An Amazing Artist who’s dedication to mastering many different skills proved to be the right way to finding her destiny.

Olga Ornata Shares her Story of how sometimes it takes you a while on your artistic journey to find your perfect place.

“In 2013, all my experimental artistic practices came together and I found what I’m doing to this day. My main medium was a collage and it became my new passion. The method itself is well-suited to the study of one of my key themes – the search for integrity.” -Olga

My parents were spacecraft engineers and all my family had engineering professions. So it was not easy for them to understand my artistic inclinations. I am very grateful to them for the fact that they could understand that I was born an artist and they helped me to find myself.

I drew always, everywhere and dreamed of becoming an artist. I created worlds and involved others in them, it was my passion.

My parents were afraid that the artist’s education was too abstract and divorced from life, so as a compromise, I went to study fashion design. This allowed me to study art and at the same time learn to create real things. I think it was a good idea, the experience of designing and creating collections is very useful for me in life.

I continued to learn a lot from different artists after graduation. I was looking for exactly what I wanted to learn and continued to master the skills. I became a good graphic artist, but that was not enough for me. Something inside made me keep searching. Finding my own style and path turned out to be a big challenge.

At the same time, I received a psychological education with a specialization in art-therapy and started to lead creative groups. Another education – Institute of Contemporary Art helped me to dive into contemporary art. The search for my creative language took a long time and did not lead to the desired results. Only a strong child’s passion for art helped me not to give up and keep doing.

Finally, in 2013, all my experimental artistic practices came together and I found what I’m doing to this day. My main medium was a collage and it became my new passion. The method itself is well-suited to the study of one of my key themes – the search for integrity. I identify two key processes within it: filtration and reconstruction.

Often my working materials are glossy magazines and the latest information being released in the world of information. Filtration, cutting out, purification, the selection of the material – this is a key stage, the moment of meeting with the stream of entropy and chaos, its unavoidability. I work through each magazine in detail: I cut up each page into sections and sort through them, with the significant fragments becoming the building material. The magazine can’t be replaced, for example, with colored paper, what’s important is the flow of thought that carries the ore and fragments along with the precious ingots, the meeting with aggressive informational noise and its processing.

The second key stage is the search for integrity. Of the varied fragments selected, I put together a new whole, looking for natural, organic ways to link them. I observe the way in which a form is gradually molded by my hands, and images and meanings materialize.

During an era of “art without craft”, when the “fabricated” nature of the work has long since receded into the background, the many hours and even months of painstaking work involved in the process of searching and making are of crucial importance to me. That process cannot be delegated to a third party for execution, it’s a personal, therapeutic, almost existential practice that provides access to powerful conditions, to a new quality of practice that transforms both the material and myself to an equal extent.

An important part of my creative process is special scissors. I have them already as a small collection and it replenishes.
