Hayley Kiyoko brings her Expectations to Los Angeles

Hayley Kiyoko Debuted Her Album “Expectations”

ArtQuench Correspondent Kiri Stevens Reports….

After three EPs she finally dropped her debut album this week “Expectations” which quickly shot to #1 on the iTunes pop charts and led for the wonderful event that took place at Space 15 Twenty on April 6th, where Hayley openly answered many questions in the Q&A and took time to meet all of her fans and supporters that were there for her release.

It’s very inspiring and telling when you can live your life the way you know you are at your happiest. That was the lesson and theme throughout this event.

Hayley Kiyoko is out and proud and here to stay. Last week she debuted her new album “Expectations” and she announced that she will be going on tour to support the record. Her fans love her so much because she is always so outspoken and proud of who she is.

Hayley started out as a child actor on Nickelodeon and Disney, and then was in a short lived group called The Stunners before branching out on her own.  In 2015 she seemed to find her own voice when she dropped her song “Girls like Girls” and established herself, especially in the LGBT community for being so open and honest at such a young age.

She spoke a lot about female empowerment and taking control of her own life and career without regard. She said she didn’t want to be in a box and although many people in the business tried to mold her and tell her how she should be and how much truth she should share, she went against that and really wanted to be her true honest self and she said she couldn’t be happier when she opted that route. It’s very inspiring and telling when you can live your life the way you know you are at your happiest. That was the lesson and theme throughout this event. There were bright lights and colors and her music was playing throughout the event to go along with this theme of being fearless, free and proud to be a woman and that it’s ok for girls to like girls.

This week she also faced some backlash when reporters asked her about her music talking about same sex love and she questioned them with why is it okay for Taylor Swift to write songs about boys on every album. A lot of the Taylor Swift fans took as an insult, but she was simply just making a point and when the question was brought up at the event she said she had nothing but love for Taylor Swift but she was simply trying to make a point. “ I just want to be able to live and sing about my life and my truths. And for me my relationships involve me liking girls”.   She also went on to say that Taylor Swift actually responded on her Tumblr and applauded her for speaking her truth and that there’s nothing but love there and that she totally didn’t take it as a diss at all. The media seems to always want to put artists against one another, especially females, but Hayley is not here for that at all which is wonderful and inspiring to hear and see. She’s all about positivity and freedom!

She said “My journey is to normalize girls liking girls.”  She said that she has identified as gay for many years but spoke out about the difficulties of seeing gay relationships and love growing up. It’s changed a lot currently but she still thinks we have ways to go.

About “Expectations” Hayley always thought she would be in a huge pop group or hip hop as she always loved hip hop and dance, but her album is more pop with a few more personal songs which include her dealing with her own “depression” and “post concussion syndrome”. And by including both her highs and lows on her album and in life and at today’s event, she really hopes to give her fans, especially the young ones hope that it will all be okay and the message she had was to surround yourself with love from friends and family that love you just the way you are.

There’s so much more to come from Hayley and we should all keep an eye out for this rising star. Download her new album today and tickets are available now for the Expectations tour!!  You can follow all things Hayley at @hayleykiyoko.
